The Windhorse Program
Writing this introduction for
the mustangs and the programs that are being designed around them became an
unexpected challenge. Do I speak from the Native Traditional, the
Metaphysical, the Historic, the Holistic Healing views, the romantic, the
practical?
It is my greatest desire to speak to the world in a way that they may
appreciate and enjoy these animals and all that they are and do….well that
would take a library …..so I am going to share my perspective.

The truth is, I think
they chose to come to this place at this time. A guest from Switzerland
insisted we needed horses for eco/spiritual/traditional balance. He found
the free roaming herd in the Pine Ridge Reservation, handed me a check and
went home. I went to South Dakota, had no idea how to select a starter herd
so I asked the Native owner to assist. He loaded them up and delivered them
and all of a sudden I had a corral full of young multicolored independent,
wild eyed horse power. I have ridden all of my life and felt quite sure we
could master some basic training and I started devouring the latest in
‘horse whispering’ techniques.
We all very quickly realized
these animals from the wild, with their built in survival skills, amazing
immune systems, powerful unshod feet and legs were here to teach us a thing
or two. This could have been their conversation with us….”We have come here
because you called. As we have mastered the art of living on this earth in a
sustainable, collaborative and playful manner, we have come to, as gently
and profoundly as possible, wake you up and assist you in learning this as
well. Like ourselves, you are more than a beautiful body, a great
intelligence with a freedom of will. We will carry your burdens while you
find your joy. We will assist you to hear what we are saying while you are
busy reading the manuals. We will open your heart and show you patience and
the power of gentleness….we will teach you about love…we’ve mastered that
too. Where would you like to begin?”

The Windhorse Program comes
from a combination of Native American and Tibetan philosophy. Windhorse is a
symbol of the basic goodness of man upon which man rides.
- The horses are managed in
a manner that maintains the ‘healthy herd’ instincts.
- They are used for joy
riding and ranch operations – low impact on the grassland.
- They still take my breath
away…on the run they look like water flowing over hills,
At play they will surely
make you laugh and squeal, to be nuzzled …priceless.
PARTICIPATION
(We are a 501 C (3), all
donations of monies, time, materials etc. are tax deductible)
- VISITORS spend time
observing and participating in the daily care and interactions
- SPONSOR A WILD MUSTANG
from government roundups….
- FUNDING FOR TRAINERS. We take great care and time to achieve trust and a
working balance of wild freedom/domestic discipline. So far they are
doing better than we are. We want wild freedom and they want to teach us
discipline. Trainers often come and volunteer/work for the summer…the
horses require follow up and lots of miles.
- A HORSE TRAILER is on the
top of our list. We accept donations, trades, barter and we are always
grateful for assistance with these ‘larger’ items.
- FEED This last winter we
had 3 feet of snow on the level... hay was essential
- HEALTH CARE The horses
have used their injuries as another way to teach us about the earth... we
have learned to make our own medicinals from wild
plants often
considered weeds by the locals. “We use alternative medicines and some
very creative and miraculous healing methods. They have been so
successful we have begun to share with different stables and horse
rescue programs. Phaela is the story (see
pic left) of a beautiful
young filly who fell, tore open her knee and broke her leg in 3
places... the vet gave low odds... she now races across the hills head in the
air, tail flying
- We enjoy hearing about
your organic, holistic, sustainable wisdoms and stories... we are always
learning.
Our gratitude to all who
have donated funds, time and expertise... and we thank the horses for
teaching us about receiving... as important as giving
